How you can Decipher Gold Markings

Those of you who’re fascinated in treasure looking all on your own may need to know what the gold hallmark stamps imply. It could be baffling at the beginning, but this rapid tutorial may help you out. The first crucial you should invest in is really a jeweler’s loupe-a 30 x 21 mm is exactly what I use. This will likely allow you to get an up-and-close glance on the stones (to look for any chips or at theclarity) along with the prongs (hopefully they aren’t worn). Subsequent, test out the hallmark. The guidebook beneath should help you decipher what that stamp suggests:

375 = 9k

417 = 10k

583 = 14k

585 = 14k

750 = 18k

834 = 20k

875 = 21k

917 = 22k

The 3-digit variety hallmark is stamped with a bit of jewelry of European origin. Previously mentioned are classified as the North American equivalents. Some hallmarks that point out that gold just isn’t genuine, not pure are: 10kGF (meaning gold stuffed), 18k HGP or 18k HGE (which means heavy gold plate/electroplate).

Earlier mentioned are a few of your regional markings for quite a few European nations.

Very informative. I used to have a lot of trouble with jewellery sellers from abroad. They would never admit it but most sell costume jewellery, using cheap prices to lure you in to buying sterling silver bracelets for womenthem.

Pendent with original chain – signed 900 over a setting that holds a round piece of glass with four added metal pieces – also the letter G in script center of one side…. also marked is 54 XI

…an original work of art?

possibly – 400 / 64 XI

I have a ring that is stamped with 18K then GSL 3, then HEART SHAPE, then T. I only know the 18 K. Can anyone tell me just what the other ones suggest?

GCioffii April 10, 2013 at 5:21 pm: Reply

I have a pair of earrings marked 750 (18K) and a mark that looks like an enter-twined V and O or a triangle and O. Were my mom's and have a swirl fan-like design. Probably from the late 50's early 60's. April 2013 Inquiry

I have a set of gold blazer buttons (3 large and 4 smaller) and I'm hoping someone can help me identify who the maker is. These are marked 14k with a "circle" upcoming to it that has either a capital "A" or "V" inside the circle with a "line" going through the center on the letter and extends to the inside edge of the circle. Any assistance would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

I have a long, weighty, beautiful snail chain necklace that was my mother's. It appears to be gold, but I can not find any evident gold marking. However there is a small tag near the clasp that is in the shape of a tiny key, but not quite. More like an owl head on top of a "T". Any thoughts?

Jewelry Collection of Ishy @grtnkefoxapv ?. “I found my amethyst cabochon ring as a smashed up and flattened mount that was going to be scrapped by the seller. I thought it looked ancient and couldn’t stop staring for the richly coloured 21ct gold. I bought the amethyst cabochon from a gem dealer in Hatton Garden and had Gaetano Chiavetta restore the mount and set the stone. It’s a stunning piece and I’m so glad I managed to save it from being melted.”

“I am fond of collecting antique medallions and charms with interesting and unusual imagery on them. There can be so much detail packed into a small place. It’s always fun to find a design that you’ve never seen before or see a makers mark/ signature and discover works by the same artist – often the original artists have huge bodies of work and I see it as a privilege to be the caretaker of something that they created.”

Jewelry Collection of Kristina @grtnkefoxapv.collective ?. “I have been collecting jewellery for as long as I can remember. The primary pieces I ever got were from my Nana’s tiny collection. Nothing fancy, but I would have been about 6 or 7. I remember a little pair of 10k gold ruby dangly earrings. The initial pair of earrings I remember buying myself were when I was 8 years old. They were from the local pharmacy, sparkly purple and straight out from the 80’s! My other grandma later gifted me a little sapphire ring from a trip to Australia and a locket with photos of her and my Grandpa in it. I now have that hanging on my Horseshoe Talisman piece.”

“Some of my favourite antique motifs would be Butterflies, Horseshoes and any type of fob with a romantic inscription, I am a sucker for love. I also love collecting buckle rings!”

Jewellery Collection of Mia @grtnkefoxapv ?. “I’ve been collecting jewelry since I was a child (my family owned and operated a fine jewelry store in Hawaii for over 25 years) and I was gifted some gold pieces, but I didn’t seriously collect fine jewellery until around three years ago.”

“Some antique motifs in jewellery that I’m really drawn to is like a lot of imagery that I also collect around the house/ in other aspects of my life. I think love tokens are beautiful, figured animals, celestial Victorian items like crescents and stars, the question marks, anything gambling relevant, and also good luck charms like horseshoes and clovers.”

Personal Jewellery Collection story that includes @grtnkefoxapv.louison @grtnkefoxapv ?

“My most sentimental pieces are all the personalized pieces I make and wear for my daughter, like my Rafa nameplate and Gothic cuff bracelet. It feels like having a piece of her with me whenever we are apart, and I know they’re future heirlooms that someday I will pass onto her.

Something I wear every day is what I have always called my Protection Necklace It's a necklace of meaningful charms that I have worn some iteration of, almost my whole life; Italian people are hefty into jewellery and very superstitious! All the women in my family wear them, and we never take them off. Mine has a few Italian good luck + religious charms that always stay, and also the others I switch out depending on where I'm at in life. The butterfly I wear for my daughter, she has a matching tiny one on her baby protection necklace she wears – we love to twin. The playing card inlay charms and lucky charms are a new addition to my line, a playful take on the "luck" theme. It's my favorite thing to wear and also my favorite thing to support build for my clients – you can't assist but feel powerful and protected wearing one.”

“I’ve always loved jewellery. I was the 8-year-old asking Santa for a ring – and not the adjustable kind! I have always loved stacking and layering. After all, it’s hard to wear three t-shirts but easy to wear three bracelets or necklaces or rings! And speaking of clothes, I love them too, but it’s very hard to tear or stain or get moth holes in solid gold!!

I have always loved designing my possess jewellery (I designed and then re-designed my engagement ring in the span of three years!). Now that I design and create jewellery as a full time job, I live my passion everyday. Jewellery silver earrings for womenis more than sparkle: it connects, it marks time, and it is the personal armor that reminds us with the warrior goddess within.”

“At 16, After a childhood of hoarding interesting trinkets, I started a market stall trading in pieces I could afford. These were usually Victorian silver lockets, stanhopes and striking base metal souvenir pieces.

Three years later I took my collection to an auction house and watched the auctioneer pan through my box for gold. In his eyes the only valuable item was a gold Art Nouveau pendant I’d found in my regular charity shop for ?2 whilst at college.

Little base metal findings held great worth to me and I continued dealing in them for years until I had made enough to expand into the world of precious stones and fine metal.”

“Jewelry is my passion because it's like a story being told, but in a miniature way! I also love gemstones of course too, but jewelry is just something so special; every little piece can be so playful and every little piece can tell a story. I especially love antique jewelry because it's rare and I love the history behind each piece, along with the excitement of finding a chunk or hunting a bit down. The treasure hunt never ends, it's just a continual journey and that's what makes it so much fun.

As a jewellery designer, I love seeing older pieces to have inspiration from and also see the technical parts of how they were made by hand in the past. For me, each bit of jewellery that I collect is also almost like a miniature bit of art. I really do enjoy wearing them, but I also just enjoy collecting them and looking at them because they bring so much joy.”
